John J.York weeps over cancer diagnosis as his future on show confirmed GH

General Hospital’s John York got emotional on Good Morning America as he opened up about his cancer battle.

The star underwent bone marrow transplants after being diagnosed with two types of blood and bone marrow cancer in 2022.

The doctors caught the disease while performing a routine check up for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

The diagnosis was particularly difficult for John as medical professionals struggled to find a match for the transplant. He went public with his diagnosis, seeking help from fans.

On the talk show, his voice shook and his tears welled up as he explained: “I made the announcement and it has helped.

And so many people have,” he said, letting out a shaky breath and tearing up before continuing: “Joined the registry, just to help to save someone’s life.

“I couldn’t talk,” he said of his reaction to finding a donor in Nov. 2023. After seven days of chemo, he was able to return to work and has been filming for months. Fans are expected to see him on the screen on June 19 as he makes his first return since last year.

John plays Mac Scorpio, a reoccurring role that he has held since 1991. According to the star, the General Hospital cast was incredibly supportive during his treatment.

To celebrate his return to the set, they wore matching ‘Mac is Back’ t-shirts. John added that it was easy to find his groove coming back as he’s so well-connected to his cast and crew.

In addition to the General Hospital team, fans have been lovely, sending him many well-wishes. An excited fan wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Welcome back!

So happy you are doing well, was able to be a part of this celebration and are back on set. Look forward to seeing Mac!”
