Days of Our Lives Just Dropped a New Mystery On Our Hands: Who’s Really Doing Stefano’s Dirty Work?

Stefano may be dead on Days of Our Lives, but his legacy — and his mystery — is likely going to live on forever. Case in point: Chad, Belle and now even EJ are running around trying to solve a mystery the Phoenix left for John and Marlena!

What’s more, it looks like someone is directly guiding them on the journey. And it’s someone that Rita’s loyal to and who’s watching things from afar!

And we mean that quite literally, as Friday’s episode ended with this mysterious person sipping champagne next to a photo of Stefano, moving chess pieces and watching a video feed of the Chad, EJ and Belle at the airfield. Creepy. But who is it?

Who’s Watching Them?

Not to assume gender, but between the suit and the hands, it does look like a man. If we want to go through missing DiMeras at the moment who could be behind this, right off the bat we can’t help but think Stefan. Do any of us really, truly believe Vivian’s claim that his (well, technically, Jake’s) heart gave out and he died offscreen? He’s got to pop back up sometime!

Stefan, though, never actually got to meet his father as he didn’t even come to town until after Stefano’s death.

At the same time, there’s also Steven Hawk. He’s supposedly on the DiMera board, and he was mentioned as having turned down an invite to Stefano’s will reading. And it’s no surprise. Though Steven is, technically, Stefano’s grandson through son Benjy, there’s never been any love lost between the Phoenix and the Hawks.

After Benjy was born, Stefano had his mom, Ellen killed, so he could take the tot. That didn’t work, but once Benjy grew up, Stefano forced him to do his dirty work by threatening Steven’s life. He then used Benjy as a human parts bank so that Stefano could get a liver transplant. After all that, André murdered Benjy, leaving Steven without a father.

With all that said, we can’t see Stefano using either Stefan or Steven to further his goals — unless one of them has gone rogue. We suppose Steven could be playing a game to get back at Stefano and the DiMeras, and he may be helping Chad and Belle out against Stefano’s wishes. But that seems a stretch.

A Woman’s Touch?

Then there’s Rita. She pocketed Stefano’s Phoenix ring at the end of Friday’s episode and suddenly seems less-than-loyal to EJ. That implies that she’s being loyal to someone Stefano placed above EJ.

If the hands and the suit are a misdirection we can think of one person who that might be: Megan. She was supposedly dead when Stefano passed, but he’s the one who had her frozen until she could be healed. And Stefano did always treat Megan as his favorite. We’ve been wondering where she’s been since she fled underground, and this could be the moment of her return, doing daddy’s dirty work once again.

Of course, there’s also the one answer that we hesitate to mention. But who would Rita be more loyal to than anyone else? Who would she swipe the Phoenix ring for?

Well, Stefano himself. It would be a little odd to have a picture of himself sitting on a table if Stefano was alive and watching his kids, but if he is back, he’d need a new body. So maybe he just wanted a photo of his old self there to remind him of who he was. And is.
