Genie Francis leaves General Hospital – The shocking reason leaves everyone stunned

Welcome back, fellow General Hospital addicts. It might be sunny outside, but the skies over Port Charles are looking dark and stormy.

We all know the legendary Jeannie Francis takes her annual summer hiatus, and she thoroughly deserves the time off—the woman has carried this franchise on her back for generations! Her last episode aired on August 31, with Laura preparing to fly to Ireland to visit Kevin Collins and baby Ace.

On paper, that sounds like a lovely respite for our mayor. But of course, the writers couldn’t just let her enjoy a peaceful vacation; they had to plant a ticking time bomb in her marriage.

Head writers Chris Van Etten and Elizabeth Korte recently gave a summer preview interview to Soap Opera Digest, dropping a quote that made my stomach drop: “Laura could use a respite with Kevin and Ace, but her trip to visit them in Ireland may yield trouble for her marriage and bigger trouble for Port Charles.”

Trouble for her marriage? Are you kidding me? Laura and Kevin are the absolute bedrock of Port Charles—the stable, loving couple we desperately need amidst all the mob violence and WSB chaos. In soap opera language, off-screen marital trouble almost always means infidelity. If they turn Kevin Collins—a deeply empathetic, loyal therapist—into a cheater who threw away his romance with the mayor for some random woman in a Dublin pub, that is character assassination at its finest!

Unless, of course, the trouble involves Ace Cassadine. Kevin took Ace to Ireland to escape the family curse. Could the conflict stem from a massive disagreement over legal adoption or how to raise him? I could accept that, but the fandom rumors heavily lean toward a sudden divorce, and doing that off-screen feels incredibly disrespectful to Laura’s character after everything she’s survived.

Then there is the second part of that quote: “bigger trouble for Port Charles.” Without Laura in the mayor’s office as the town’s moral compass, Port Charles is spiraling into utter anarchy. The PCPD is a mess, the WSB is acting like a rogue organization, and Jack Brennan’s body was just found floating in the Metro Court pool while Drew and Ava quietly buried another body in the woods. Meanwhile, Anna Devane is completely unraveling, hallucinating Peter August, while international criminal Jen Sidwell holds an ADA hostage at gunpoint.

The political vacuum Laura leaves behind is massive, and I predict the next two months will be an absolute bloodbath leading into fall sweeps. When Jeannie Francis returns in late October, she’ll likely step off the plane heartbroken, only to find her city in ruins.

I’m begging the writers: please let this be a misdirection. Give us an adventure storyline with external threats—like a Cassadine plot—rather than destroying one of our few remaining healthy couples. What do you guys think the trouble in Ireland really is? Let me know in the comments below!
